Advertisement for position of Project Research Scientist-I (Non-Medical) [Innovation Fellow]
About the Fellowship
This fellowship is an intensive, hands-on innovation journey where fellows spend time observing unmet clinical needs in actual clinical settings, develop solutions, and translate them into viable, real-world Assistive-Tech ventures. This fellowship is neither a conventional job, nor a classroom-based academic program.
2-3 fellows of various backgrounds (design, engineering, medical etc.) are paired up in a team and work together throughout the fellowship. The fellowship tenure includes:
Clinical immersion
Fellows spend the initial 2 months shadowing doctors, nurses and technicians. They observe patients and healthcare workflows in OPDs, operation theatres, wards, and clinics within a department at AIIMS- New Delhi.
Identifying unmet needs
Fellows notice pain points, inefficiencies, safety issues, unmet needs, and gaps in care in the area of Assistive Technology.
Need screening and validation
Identified needs are evaluated for clinical importance, patient impact, stakeholder interest, market potential, existing solutions, regulatory complexity, reimbursement pathways, technical feasibility, and business viability. Fellows are expected to review scientific, clinical, and market literature during this stage.
Concept Generation, Prototyping and Testing
The team develops multiple solution concepts, which may include medical devices, diagnostics, digital health tools, workflow improvements, or service models in Assistive Technology. Promising concepts are converted into early sketches, mock-ups, simulations, low-cost models, or functional prototypes. Fellows test assumptions, gather feedback, and iterate rapidly.
TRL 3–4 Prototype Development
One or two final concepts are selected and developed further toward TRL 3–4 prototype readiness during the fellowship duration.
Beyond this, the team of fellows is encouraged to incorporate a start-up which can obtain the license of the technology invented during the fellowship to take on the journey of commercialising it.
